love and respect: a wedding at the ohio state university

I’ve gotta say it: the wedding industry focuses way too much on the ladies.  I totally get that some of us were planning our wedding back when the boys were crashing toy trucks into one another.  But you know, we all grow up.  Sure I’ve heard my fair share of “whatever she wants” coming from the groom.  But I’ve also seen, more and more lately, the gentlemen being deeply involved in the wedding.  Helping choose things, helping make things, just being an equal part of the whole thing.

And for these two, that was certainly the case.  This wedding was equally what they both wanted.  Both ideas were valued and respected.  And isn’t that a beautiful way to start a marriage?  Equal and mutually respected.

Mike had an awesome time getting ready with his guys. ohio state university wedding

His brother took the ring thing seriously.  Like, James Bond seriously.ohio state university wedding

And this is the shot that sealed it for me: look at that happy face getting ready to put on his jacket.  I freaking LOVE it!  He was just as excited to put that jacket on as Katie was to put on her dress.  ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

He chose pips from Star Trek to adorn his jacket, and to let everyone know he was captain for the day (his groomsmen were commanders).  ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

Meanwhile, back at the hotel, Katie received some special childhood toys from her mom: her little pup and her She-Ra sword.  Heck yes, her She-Ra sword.  ohio state university wedding

Her bridesmaids had a little dance party to get things going.ohio state university wedding

And her ring bearer was the cutest EVER!ohio state university wedding

Her niece adoringly watched her get ready (she’s had some practice at this flower girl thing before!), ohio state university wedding

And her sister sewed a fallen button back on without batting an eye (see the dress debacle from her wedding here!)ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

Katie’s brother helped put on her bracelet.  Beautiful.ohio state university wedding

And Katie was feeling beautiful on her day: gorgeous dress, ohio state university wedding

and a full heart ready to marry the man she loves.ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

After pictures, the ladies toasted, and the ring bearer was pretty sad not to be included (it was mimosas and they didn’t want to stain his awesome clothes).ohio state university wedding

But then Katie’s sister had the genius to pour in some water.  All he really wanted was to clink some glasses.  Who can blame him?  Crisis averted.ohio state university wedding

Ceremony time!  They saw each other for the first time as she was walking down the aisle.  Love this happy face!ohio state university weddingohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

It feels like every time I got to share time with these two, something would happen that would make me want to scream, “YES!  This is how relationships are supposed to be!  This is how it’s done right!”  Just in the way they speak with one another, in the way they touch one another, in the way they react to one another: it’s all done in respect and love.  ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

They respect one another’s hearts, thoughts, ideas, pasts, intellects, quirks – just all of it.  They are truly meant to be together, these two.ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

They first met on the curling ice, so it only makes sense that their cake toppers would be curling stones (and if you’re wondering where one gets such an amazing creation, the answer is: a full day of Katie crafting).ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

And then, there was the cake and the dancing and the dancing and the dancing…ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

This next one of Katie and Mike dancing might just be my very favorite from the whole wedding.  🙂ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding ohio state university wedding

Katie and Mike, goodness it was a joy to get to know you both and to be a part of your day.  Really and truly, I feel honored to know you both.  Thank you for your good example of love and respect that the rest of us can watch and learn from.  You are a really lovely couple, and I know you will do good things together in this world!
