why are you shaving your head?

“Why are you shaving your head?  Is there some way that you’ve been touched by cancer?”

I was asked these questions this week.  And I thought, who HASN’T been touched by cancer?  Or maybe more like clobbered with cancer.  There are so many heart-wrenching stories – of courage, of recovery, of loss.  Beloved family members of ours have passed away from cancer, our daughter’s foster home director in China passed away from cancer, my good friend’s wife passed away when she was far too young, my good high school friend passed away from cancer just before she was to graduate from college.

Cancer is a big or small part of pretty much everyone’s lives.  And the research funding that goes toward childhood cancer is not enough.  All types of childhood cancers combined receive only 4% of U.S. federal funding for cancer research.  There is a gap in funding there.  And it’s crying out for help!

But the thing about cancer is that it could be any of us at any time.  I don’t mean that to scare, but to spread some empathy.  Families are struggling with this everywhere all the time.  For some, there is hope.  For some, there is deep sorrow.

But St. Baldrick’s is working on it.  They’re trying to fix that funding gap and make things better.  This story about Abby is a great example.

I can’t help but watch it and think, “My girls like princesses, too.”  I have no idea what it is like to be or have a child with cancer.  I can not imagine.  Each and every one of these kids with cancer has a story and is loved.

And THAT is why I’m shaving my head.

If you’re in Central Ohio, please consider coming out to Fado Irish Pub at 3 pm this Sunday for our big event!  I promise it’ll be fun!  You can laugh at/admire/rub my shiny, bald head; give a donation for raffle tickets for great things; or just sit back and enjoy some really great food and drinks.  Kids are welcome!!!

If you can’t make it, but would like to donate, you can do that here.  And know that there are so many kids and families around the world who will be touched and who appreciate your kindness.
