“Blackbird singing in the dead of night, take these broken wings and learn to fly
All your life, you were only waiting for this moment to arise” -Paul McCartney
Whenever my dad picks up his guitar, this is almost always the first song he plays. One of my most favorite pictures I took as a kid is of him on the porch playing his guitar with a bunch of kids (my brothers and sisters) climbing on him. When I came for this baby’s newborn session, I spotted the guitar right away. I asked this new dad if he’d like to play, and the first song he played was “Blackbird.” I could hear my own dad singing in my head. It was actually hard to hold back the tears. This brand-new family had made me tear up a few times during our session, with the way they marveled at baby. But this time, with “Blackbird” being strummed on the guitar, I couldn’t help thinking back to my own childhood, wondering if my dad had ever played that song for me in my first days on this earth. I know that life was very hard for my parents at that time, but I like to think maybe he took a minute to sit down and get lost in that song. And so many of the lyrics told the story of this family in front of my lens. They are in the midst of a move – flying off to a new town with their brand-new baby girl. Being born is a seriously life-changing event for all parties – “you were only waiting for this moment to arise.” And I have to hold back a little chuckle when I think of their little blackbird “singing” in the dead of night. So excited to watch this little one grow!
Beautiful! So many favorites:)
